Art in the Outside Environment

Out and about art!

Nature has the very best materials for creating art and there are so many benefits to getting out in the fresh air with your children and searching for things to make an outdoor picture with!

You will find all sorts of treasures, depending on whether you go to your local park, beach or woods. Look out for all natures offerings including:

  • Pebbles
  • Fir cones
  • Leaves
  • Feathers
  • Flowers
  • Conkers
  • Shells
  • And twigs

Your masterpiece can be big or small, an individual creation or a group activity.

The great part is that you don’t need to take it home. Just take a photograph that you can keep forever and look back on. Encourage your children to leave their Outdoor Art for others to discover, like an open-air Art Gallery! You may just start something that others will take inspiration from!

Top tips:

  • While your child is making their own piece of artwork you could make something too – not only will it be therapeutic for you to get involved in being creative, it is also a great opportunity for you to both share ideas
  • As you start creating your masterpiece and your child is focused on their artwork, you can model new language by talking about what you are doing and what they are doing. For example, “I have found a feather, I am going to use it as the boat sail” or “wow, your grey stone is big and heavy!”
  • Talking in the moment about what you are doing allows your child to make a connection between the spoken word and action/object
