Preparing for Primary School

What you need to know for before and after applying!

The school year runs from September to July, so your child will start school within the school year they turn 5. For example, if your child turns 5 in July they can start school the previous September when they are still 4.

Starting reception class at school is a huge milestone for your child, so being prepared can make all the difference!

Top tips and resources:

Before applying

  • You can apply for a school place online: Apply for a Primary School place in Essex
  • Visit schools: contact schools in your area to arrange visits in the autumn term (the year before your child starts school) – this will help to build up a good picture of how each school runs and where you can see your child being happy
  • Gather as much information as possible: this will help towards make your decision

Once your child’s school place is offered:

  • Ask for support from local family services: such as your local Family Hub, childcare setting and school
  • Attend transition events: the school will hold these during the summer – your child might meet their new teacher or have a taster day, so be sure to find out about these
  • Follow our Starting School Campaign: keep an eye out on social media over the summer months where we will be sharing top tips and advice for starting reception
  • Essex Libraries are also on hand to help: they host a ‘School Readiness’ campaign which includes ‘Big School Meet Up’ sessions and starting school borrow bags; each one contains 6 specially chosen stories/information books to help support you and your child: School Readiness Campaign 2025 | News | Essex Library Service
