Rhyme Time Sacks

Make up a ‘Rhyme Time’ basket with instruments, puppets and objects!

Learning nursery rhymes is a great way of building a child’s vocabulary and is a lovely activity to help bond with a baby. By adding actions and props while you are singing makes the activity more fun and interactive.

Research shows that children who know 8 nursery rhymes by heart at age 4, are likely to be more confident at spelling and reading by age 8!

A rhyme time sack is a bag full of items that each relate to each nursery rhyme. For example a teddy for round and round the garden, a star for twinkle twinkle little star and a boat for row row row your boat.

A rhyme sack for children can be made cheaply and easily, with toys and objects found around the house and stored in a bag or box to keep altogether. Drawstring bags work particularly well as they can be pulled close at the end of the session and can double up as a ‘feely bag’ for young babies.

Top Tip

Once a child is familiar with several rhymes, gradually introduce some new objects and learn some new rhymes. If your child attends childcare you can speak to them to find out songs that they sing so you can sing them at home.
