Talking to Your Baby 6-12 Months

Chatter matters!

Your baby learns to talk every time you talk to them. Your baby learns to listen every time you listen to them.

Your baby changes at each stage of their development, and in turn your role as a parent develops with how to support their language and communication skills. As you notice changes in your baby, you will notice changes in yourself.

Top tips:

  • When talking to your baby, try to get down to their level so they can see your mouth and facial expressions
  • When playing, follow your baby’s lead and comment on what they are doing – using actions or objects as you are talking helps them make connections with what you are saying
  • Talk through everything you do around the house and when you are out and about – this helps your baby make connections to the world around them, listen out for sounds, see different things and things they may recognise
  • Talk slowly and clearly so your baby can hear what you are saying – repeating key words or repeating what your baby babbles/says can help them remember the words as well as acknowledge what they said
